How to Get the Perfect Headshots

It’s been more than 5 years since you had headshots taken. Now you’ve made a few changes and think it’s time to update them. Things have changed quite a bit, you’ve since dyed your hair (or failed to dye it), gotten older, elevated your brand, and maybe you’ve lost or gained a few pounds. Either way, you’d like for potential leads, prospects, and clients to recognize you and your brand when they see your logo, content, or images. Quite contrary, maybe things haven’t changed much, but you’ve decided it’s time to update your marketing materials, website, and Linkedin profile picture with more professional images.

Here are five ways to get the perfect headshot.

Regardless of your reason, your headshot becomes your first impression as a professional, and it’s important to take it seriously.

Take a look at your industry

What are industry standards? As a realtor, your headshot could look a lot differently than a dentist. Would you like to appear more professional than the standard? On the other hand, maybe you’d like to look more approachable than the average financial advisor.

Consider your brand messaging

Don’t be afraid to modify the industry’s standard. As long as it depicts the message your brand is trying to convey, your images will look great! What is your brand’s marketing message? What would you like potential customers, prospects, and clients to think when they see your headshot? Does it align with your brand’s messaging?

Hire a professional makeup artist

There are several reasons why I recommend hiring a professional makeup artist for headshots. The first being that it automatically elevates the look of your images. In addition, it makes the post production process of your images and retouching more seamless.

Plan your outfits or wardrobe

When you book your professional headshot with Niesha Fuentes, you’ll have the opportunity to change into multiple outfits. As a general rule of thumb, you should plan to bring at least three outfits. I suggest both a business professional outfit and a business casual or uniform. The final outfit will be a backup in case of wardrobe malfunctions or emergencies. It is my recommendation to refrain from wearing large logos or brand graphics, unless they are your own. In addition, some patterns may not be as flattering on you. Therfore, solid colors and designs will be your best bet.

Coordinate with the background color

In regards to which background color to choose, I find gray to be the most versatile option since it tends to photograph well.  However, the industry standard background colors for professional headshots are blue and gray. I try to help clients coordinate their wardrobe selections with background colors. We’ll discuss more about what you’re wanting to achieve during your discovery call, as well as your style and concept consultation.
